You might not be a farm-to-table kind of girl, but the appeal of creating beauty products from various edibles in your own kitchen is enticing. It’s also easy and very affordable. Being able to eat whatever you slather on your face or hair is great in theory, but most DIY beauty recipes tend to be old wives tales rather than beauty game-changers. Amongst countless recipes that will do nothing more than make you smell like breakfast, there are a few which are incredibly effective and can give any store bought hair product a run for its money.
If you’re feeling DIY-inclined and looking to give your hair a boost, here are 3 natural hair treatments that really work.
Moisturising Mask with Protein
Ingredients:
1-2 tsp coconut oil
2 tsp olive oil
1 tsp honey
1 egg
Benefits:
This mask combines the moisturising properties of coconut oil, olive oil and honey, with the protein from raw egg to promote hair growth and leave you with softer, stronger strands.
Directions:
Mix all ingredients together and massage into dry hair. Wait 10-15 minutes, then wash out with shampoo and conditioner.
Lavender Leave in Conditioner
Ingredients:
¼ cup vegetable glycerin
1 cup water
1 tsp lavender oil
1 plastic or glass spray bottle
Benefits:
Vegetable glycerin is a humectant, which works to seal in moisture and protect your hair from breakage. Lavender oil can aid with hair growth as it helps regulate blood circulation in the body. The calming aromatherapy properties of lavender oil are an added bonus.
Directions:
Mix the vegetable glycerin together with the water. Add the lavender oil and stir until combined. Store in a spray bottle and shake before applying.
Natural Sea Salt Spray
Ingredients:
1 cup of water
1 tsp sea salt
½ tsp coconut oil
One dab of all natural hair gel (for hold)
1 plastic or glass spray bottle
Benefits: Using chemical free styling products is not only better for your hair but also highly beneficial for the environment. With the added benefit of coconut oil, this spray will give you beach waves without drying out your hair.
Directions:
Add all ingredients into a spray bottle and shake thoroughly. Spray on damp or dry hair, scrunching the hair with your fingers as you go to create waves.
