SPF is the hero we need but don’t deserve. The unassuming ingredient is an absolute powerhouse of the skin health world and not only protects us from the harsh damage the sun does to our cells, it’s an absolute must-have for preventing aging.
Now more than ever we’re becoming educated on just how damaging sun exposure can be and it’s actually cool to be sun smart! Gone are the days of lathering your limbs in tanning oil and baking under the sun for hours on end every Summer. To slip, slop and slap is now second nature and sunscreen has become an integral part of our beauty routines.
Of course, not all sunscreens are created equal, and we believe the best sunscreen is the one you’re actually going to use. That’s what makes moisturisers that have a healthy dose of SPF so great. It’s so easy to make them a part of your routine without having to add an extra step, you’re forgoing greasy products that upset your makeup and you get the added hydration!
We love that you can easily reapply these moisturisers over your makeup and get all of the SPF benefits before leaving the office or ducking out to do some errands. They help to solve a problem that many of us face when it comes to reapplying SPF once we’ve already done our makeup for the day.
It’s important to note that while SPF 15 is suitable for those days when you’re going to be inside at the office or chilling out at home, you’ll need to think about adding a stronger SPF if you’re planning to spend some time in the sun.
As for which ones to try, here are a few that we love…
Formulated with 21% pure zinc oxide, this ultra-hydrating moisturiser gives you both UVA and UVB broad spectrum protection and it’s also non-comedogenic so it won’t clog your pores. Because it uses pure zinc and not a chemical sunscreen, you need to really rub it into your skin, however with a little massaging it feels just like a moisturiser and won’t interfere with your makeup one bit.
Clarins Hydra-Essential Silky Cream SPF 15
If you like your SPF to feel virtually non-existent while actually offering protection, you’ll love this moisturiser. The formula sits comfortably between a gel and cream base and you would never know there’s sunscreen in there. It’s lightweight on the skin, it won’t leave you feeling greasy or clogged, and its smart formula means that you’re hydrating your skin on every level to better retain moisture.
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Lotion Sunscreen SPF50
While it’s not sold as a moisturiser, this is one of the most hydrating sunscreens I’ve ever used and is great for adding serious luminosity underneath your makeup. While testing it I was comfortably able to forgo a regular moisturiser as there is plenty of hyaluronic acid in the formula. It’s really thin and slippery in texture and soaks in easily and, did I mention it’s SPF 50, 4 hours water resistant and can be patted atop of your finished makeup look when it’s time to reapply without messing everything up? It’s definitely worth a try.
Anyone who follows Zoe Foster-Blake on Instagram will know that years and years went into the research, formulation and testing of her first SPF product, and it shows in the final result. Zincredible is a lightweight daily moisturiser that is super slippery and absorbs quickly to simultaneously give you hydration and SPF protection. You can get it in a tinted or non-tinted version and neither feel greasy or heavy.
