The Best Cleansing Oils and How To Use Them

Once a little-known step in Korean beauty routines, now a staple in many mainstream skincare regimes, cleansing oils are continuing to rise in popularity and could be just the thing your skin needs to restore a youthful, and clean, glow.

If you’re still a little unsure of slathering your face in oil, now’s the time to push yourself outside of your comfort zone because you’ll quickly realise the benefits of adding a cleansing oil to your routine. Here’s what you need to know…

What do cleansing oils do?

Cleansing oils are great for breaking down makeup, dirt and impurities on your skin to give it a thorough clean, all without stripping you of your natural oils.

While all cleansers are designed to clean your skin, not all are designed to properly remove makeup and you may find that no matter how well you scrub, you’re still left with traces of foundation or mascara. When used over makeup, cleansing oils breakdown the oils and lipids in your makeup making even waterproof make-up easy to remove.

It’s also well known that oil and water don’t mix and the same goes for the sebum that clogs your pores to create blackheads and pimples. Due to its nature, cleansing oils are great at working to dissolve and dislodge oils and sebum that are clogging your pores.

Who should you use a cleansing oil?

The great thing about cleansing oils are that they work for all skin types, even sensitive. If you suffer from dry or dehydrated skin you’ll notice the instant relief from harsh and stripping cleansers and over-time your skin’s protective barrier will be repaired to be able to better hold moisture. People with oil or combination skin will notice a reduction in the amount of oil they produce thanks to the regulatory benefits of the cleansing oil all while enjoying a cleansed and nourished complexion.

How To Use Cleansing Oil

It’s always best to use a cleansing oil as a part of a two-step cleansing routine. It should be your first step in the evening and if your skin can’t handle a double cleanse in the morning, then it can be your one and only cleanse.

Step one: Apply the cleansing oil to your dry face and gently work it in using circular motions.

Step two: Wet your hands and continue to work the cleansing oil. It will begin to emulsify.

Step three: Using warm water, wash the cleansing oil from your face. A great product should leave no oily residue.

Step four: Follow with your standard cleanser or micellar water for your second cleanse.
