The Beauty Hack That Could Be the Answer to Body Odour

Nobody likes to talk about it but body odour is something that we all deal with. Whether it’s you trying to combat it yourself or that guy sitting next to you on the bus, we’re all familiar and no-one’s particularly fond.

That’s why when I came across this body hack that promised to eliminate body odour, I was intrigued. It’s not something I have to personally face often as deodorant is normally enough but at the end of a long Summer’s day and a sweaty evening gym sesh, I wouldn’t exactly describe my underarms as fresh.

Luckily, it turns out that the answer to getting rid of body odour is as simple as using one of our favourite skincare products, AHAs. Yes, a simple swipe of a glycolic or lactic acid toner underneath your arms each morning combats the bacteria that cause BO leaving you smelling fresh without having to use deodorants that often leave marks on your clothes or have a less than pleasant soapy scent.

The science behind why acids work as a natural deodorant is fairly simple. Body odour is said to be caused by the bacteria that breaks down lipids and proteins in your sweat. When you use AHAs on your pits, you’re lowering the PH balance of the area to a point where BO bacteria can’t survive.

At first I was hesitant so only used my gentlest concentration of AHAs. However, I quickly realised that my underarms were up to the challenge and able to take a higher concentration of around 8% glycolic acid. I can safely say from my own personal experience that the hack really did work to control odour. Of course, everyone will react differently but there’s no harm in trying, right?

Not only is it great for body odour, using AHAs under your arms can also help to prevent ingrown hairs, razor rash and discolouration such as pigmentation. While it won’t prevent sweat, you can safely use a swipe of your favourite AHA toner underneath an antiperspirant for long lasting freshness.
