23 May How To Pick Your Wedding Lip Colour
Choosing the lip colour you wear on your wedding day is just as important as which scent you choose or picking your shoes. It’s an accessory after all and that colour will be a part of your memory of your special day forever. It’s a lot of pressure, right?
Luckily, it doesn’t have to be as hard as swatching every single lipstick at Mecca or Sephora and choosing the one you like best. There’s a few things you can consider that will narrow down your search and lead you to the perfect pout.
Firstly, although your wedding day is a special event, you shouldn’t be going too over the top with your makeup. It’s important to look like you, so aim to elevate your everyday look. Look at the lipstick shades you wear most often. If red lipstick is your trademark, then choose a new shade of red for your wedding. It’s a part of your personality after all. If you stick with classic nudes on a daily basis, have a look at whether you choose nudes with a pink, yellow or neutral undertone. Some of us like baby pinks, others like a beige or even taupe tone. Find the colour you most commonly choose to represent who you are and narrow your search to that category.
Once you’ve narrowed your shade search, you should be trying to find a new lipstick that compliments your favourite everyday shades but is different enough to be special. You’re essentially filling a gap in your collection with a lipstick that suits your personality but that you haven’t worn before.
Next, think about the finish you want. There’s absolutely no rules but in general, a glossy or balmy finish goes beautiful with a Summer beauty look whereas a velvet matte finish works for Winter.
One of the most important things to consider is the longevity of the formula you choose. Sometimes, even the most matte of finishes are prone to smudging. The last thing you want is your new hubby walking you down the aisle after your vows with lipstick smudged across lips. The key here is to test it out, wear it to work, wear it to dinner and weekend cocktails. Put it through its paces to ensure it can withhold your wedding day.
Here’s a few of our favourite for a beautiful bridal look…
This tea-rose pink lipstick is perfect for brides wanting a classic pink lip that’s more ‘classy’ than ‘barbie’. It’s fresh and vibrant without being too bright and really helps to awaken your complexion. The formula is a very comfortable wear. It glides on easily and dries down to a creamy, but not glossy, finish. It’s also really hydrating so you won’t have to worry about cracked lips and fine lines throughout your big day.
Honestly, almost any one of Tom Ford’s luxurious lipsticks would be perfect for your big day. Between the creamy formulas and shades that seem to suit every skin tone, they’re winners. One in particular though is the Bare Peach shade. It will give you a perfectly peach pout with warm orange undertones and a very light pearlescent finish. The shade is great for a Summer wedding and for brides who love a nude lip but want something a bit different.
If your lips are prone to dryness, they’ll love this nourishing formula. It’s been formulated with Wild Mango Butter and Zea Mays Oil that have both softening and restorative powers. For this one, the shade name says it all when it come to the tone. It really is a neutral nude, if not a little on the pink side but perfectly balanced and natural looking nonetheless. It’s a great transitional colour so perfect for both Summer and Winter beauty looks.
If you’re going for a red, then you’ll want to be 100% sure it’s not going to budge. Onto your hubby, your teeth, your dress… you can’t afford any transferral at all. Thankfully, MAC’s Retro Matte Liquid Lipsticks go on flawlessly and stay put. Their staying power is next level and even the most vibrant of shades stay perfectly intact. Although they’re a matte finish, the formula doesn’t dry out your lips and is a very comfortable wear. ‘Feels so grand’ is a deep true red that is timeless without feeling like you’ve seen it a million times.
We all know and love the Audacious lipstick from Nars but the Velvet Lip Glide’s deserve as much praise. The formula goes on like a lip gloss and dries down to a really soft, opaque matte. The colour Stripped is a sheer beige that offers that kind of ‘my lips but better’ colour that is perfect for a bridal look. If you want a really natural and true nude that isn’t too pink, Stripped is for you.
