Dry Shampoos You Shouldn’t Be Living Without

Dry shampoo really is the MVP of any beauty routine and if you aren’t a total devotee, you haven’t tried the right ones. Designed to absorb excess oils from your roots and scalp, it has the power to take your post-gym day three hair back to a day one blow out.

Beyond its oil-busting abilities, dry shampoo is the perfect tool for bringing volume and texture back to lifeless hair, even in fine hair that seems to do anything in its power to stay flat.

Admittedly, the wrong formula and forgetting a few key application techniques can take using dry shampoo from a time-saving hero to an absolute disaster. Luckily, there are plenty of great products that don’t leave that annoying white cast, don’t build up in your hair to leave it feeling thick and damp and won’t disrupt your scalp’s ability to regulate oil production.

Before we dive into our favourites, have a read of our top tips so you get the most out of every application of your dry shampoo.

TIPS TO USE DRY SHAMPOO

Don’t spray too close to your hair

Hold the bottle at least 20cm away from your roots to allow the formula and oil-absorbing ingredients to evenly distribute throughout your hair. Spraying too close means you’ll end up with a clump of product in one spot that will be harder to distribute and won’t be doing its job.

Always shake before you spray

The absorbent and starchy ingredients in dry shampoo tend to settle on the bottom of your can so it’s important to give it a little shake before you spray away. That way, the ingredients will be dispersed evenly in the can.

Stick to the top few inches

Using too much dry shampoo throughout the ends of your hair, which tend to be on the drier side already, can give you a lacklustre do. Instead, concentrate the majority of the product on the areas of your hair where it’s greasiest around your scalp roots and the first few centimetres. As you brush the product out, it will work its way into the lower sections.

You don’t have to wait until your hair is due for a wash

Dry shampoo is great at preventing oil build-up before it gets beyond repair so consider spraying a touch around your hairline before a workout or when styling your hair on days two and three of your wash cycle. Go easy because it is possible to overuse dry shampoo, but don’t feel like it only works on already greasy roots.

Leave the product for at least 1 minute before brushing it through

Once you’ve sprayed in your dry shampoo leave it for a minute or two before brushing it through. That way it has time to sit and soak up any excess oil from the roots before you brush it through the rest of your hair.
