BB and CC Creams – What are they and which should you use?

Perfect for those days when you want a lighter look or only need a bit of help evening you skin tone, BB and CC creams are becoming must-have products and thanks to their skin loving ingredients, are quickly replacing foundations all-together.

BB creams, aka beauty balm creams, are a lightweight version of foundation that are combined with skincare ingredients. CC creams are colour correctors and generally contain ingredients that address redness or sallowness.

The beauty of both is in their ability to build coverage without caking and your skin still looking like skin, rather than looking made up. You can apply them with your fingers and the good ones soak straight into your skin for a radiant finish.

Because they’re that bit lighter, BB and CC creams are less likely to separate or crease and are great for hot summer days when you begin to perspire. You don’t need to worry about them clogging your pores either, so an afternoon run or gym sesh can be completed sans face wash!

Here’s my favourites…

Peter Thomas Roth Skin to Die For Mineral Matte CC Cream

One of the newest additions to the PTR family, this CC cream is my new Summer favourite. I’m not usually one for a matte complexion but there’s a beautiful radiance to the colour that gives your face dimension and a natural looking glow (not shine or sparkle). It’s packed with anti-aging ingredients including hyaluronic acid, THD ascorbate (50x more powerful than vitamin C!) vitamin E and kaolin clay to help absorb oil. With a light to medium coverage it glides on easily for a natural, ‘no-foundation’ look. Definitely worth stopping past Sephora to pick up!

The Base by Lara Bingle LB Cream

Touted as a primer, moisturiser and foundation, this skincare and makeup hybrid leaves you looking dewy while hydrating your skin and evening out your skin tone. It’s lightweight and a light coverage as a result but it does build quite nicely so you can easily increase your level of coverage. I love to apply it with a brush for a bit more coverage or fingers for a natural glow.  Also, it’s SPF 15+ which is just enough for your average day at the office.

Bobbi Brown BB Cream SPF 30+

For those days when you only need enough coverage to freshen your complexion, the Bobbi Brown BB cream is an easy go-to product. The coverage is exactly what you would expect from a BB cream; light, dewy and very hydrating on the skin. It’s offered in 6 different shades, which is generous as far as BB creams go. And did I mention it’s SPF 30+?! A Summer winner for sure!

It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream SPF 50+

If you haven’t heard about this product by now, where have you been hiding? A consistent best seller at Sephora, it’s loved the world over for its colour correcting, skin smoothing and glow inducing powers. It’s a medium coverage but easily buildable to full-coverage – you could completely replace your foundations for this one! It’s also hard to deny the benefits of the factor 50 physical sunscreen!

Omorovicza Complexion Perfector BB Cream SPF 20

If you don’t mind a bit of a splurge, this luxurious BB cream is worth it. The sheer finish colour is boosted with vitamin C and hyaluronic acid. It’s formulated to help boost collagen in your skin, refine texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines, all while the SPF protects against UVA and UVB rays. It feels really hydrating on the skin and has great staying power for a BB cream.
