Tips To Keeping a Glow Without Getting Shiny

If there’s one thing that will always be true about beauty trends, it’s that glowing skin is in. However, glowing skin is not to be confused with that slick of shine that oily skin types usually find themselves blotting away just a few hours into the day.

It’s common for people with oily skin to go for ultra-matte products; from primers and foundations to setting powders and sprays in an effort to control shine and keep makeup in place. Unfortunately, that often means giving up on achieving that enviable glass skin look and leaving dewy finishes behind.

Even those with drier skin who want to jump on the dewy bandwagon to achieve a healthy-looking glow can be left feeling slick and shiny instead of glowing if you use the wrong products.

Luckily, there are plenty of great products and application techniques that will help you get glowing skin without fear of your complexion turning into a slipping and sliding oily mess.

Start with a gentle exfoliator

Whether you have dry or oily skin, getting that glass skin look starts with a touch of gentle exfoliation to buff away dead skin cells and help to regulate oil production. Products like the Medik8 Press & Glow Daily Exfoliating PHA Tonic are great because the gentle PHA blend means you won’t over exfoliate.

Highlight before you put on foundation

That lit from within glow we’re all desperate to achieve can quickly be faked by using a balmy and translucent highlighter like the Westman Atelier Lit Up Highlighting Stick before you put on your foundation. Apply it to the high points of your face but keep away from the T-zone or any areas you find yourself getting shiny throughout the day.

Opt for velvet finish foundations

Once upon a time you had dewy or matte foundation finishes to choose from, but now there are a league of products that promise a velvety skin-like finish that sits comfortably between a dewy and matte finish. These foundations are great at staying in place and allow you to strategically add your own dewiness in the places you need it without committing to it all over.

Choose a setting powder with radiance

It can be tempting to pick up a mattifying setting powder in hopes of preventing shine but you’ll undo all of your hard work achieving dewy skin. Instead, choose a product like the Shiseido Synchro Skin Invisible Silk Powder in Radiant or Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder Glow to keep your makeup in place while taking advantage of the light reflecting particles for a bit of extra dewiness.

Only set the areas you get shiny

Instead of dusting your setting powder over your entire face, use a smaller fluffy brush to pinpoint the areas you need it so you’re not dulling any dewiness. Think the centre of your forehead, the corners of your nose, chin and under the eyes to prevent movement of your foundation and oil-control without forgoing glow.
