Liquid Chlorophyll Is Going Viral – Here’s Why

You can thank TikTok for a lot of the beauty trends that circulate these days and honestly, we love getting a glimpse into what’s making waves around the world. From soap brows to heatless curls, hydrocolloid bandages and even slugging. There’s always something new to be inspired by.

Next up? Liquid chlorophyll.

If you don’t remember from science class, chlorophyll is the green pigment responsible for giving plants their colour. It’s the same pigment that plants use to create energy through the process of photosynthesis.

You can find it in its natural form in the green fruits and vegetables you eat, but it’s gaining popularity as a liquid supplement thanks to TikToks legion of ‘skinfluencers’. Not only does the swirling green liquid make for a cool video, many people believe it has mighty skin benefits too.

It’s important to note that not every expert agrees the hype around chlorophyll is worth it. But there are plenty that have found it to have the following benefits:

  • Potent antioxidant: Chlorophyll contains antioxidants that can help fight free radicals, oxidative stress, and aging, and protect against chronic diseases such as cancer.
  • Skin healing: Chlorophyll may promote wound healing and reduce acne lesions when applied topically and used in conjunction with phototherapy.
  • Supports adequate micronutrient intake: Chlorophyll provides extra micronutrients and fatty acids that you may not be getting enough of in your diet, such as vitamins A, C, E, and K, magnesium, beta-carotene, and more.
  • Supports liver function: The liver does an amazing job at detoxifying our bodies, but sometimes it can use some support from diet and supplements. Animal studies have shown that liquid chlorophyll supplementation may help support the liver by reducing liver inflammation caused by harmful gut bacteria.

Anecdotally, TikTok stars toting liquid chlorophyll as the next best thing are also finding it helps to clear up the skin, brighten the whites of the eyes and maintain hydration.

While there seems to be a lot of loyal fans of the liquid supplement, you should remember that it shouldn’t replace leafy greens in your diet. They’ll always be the most nutrient rich and bioavailable source of chlorophyll. But with no adverse side effects, it can’t hurt to jump on the trend bandwagon and see if liquid chlorophyll can work for you.
