It seems that wearing a mask while out and about is our new way of life, especially if you’re living in Victoria. But we’re determined not to let that get in the way of creating our favourite makeup looks daily.
While you certainly need to consider keeping things a little lighter under your mask in order to reduce the risk of breakouts, you don’t have to go without in fear that your mask will end up covered in makeup with your face left bare.
We’ve rounded up our favourite makeup primers and setting sprays that will prep your skin to make sure foundation or simply tinted moisturiser stays in place, and some heavy-hitting setting sprays that will lock in your look. All of these guys have been thoroughly road tested and we’ve made sure there’s nothing on our list that will leave your pores in risk of getting all blocked up.
Hydrating, calming and smoothing all in one. This lightweight primer is a great prep step for dry Winter skin that’s feeling the effects of this crazy year. Added chamomile extract helps to reduce irritation and the velvety finish allows makeup to sink into your skin for a natural finish. It’s great for preventing oils from your skin disrupting your makeup which can create transfer.
It’s pricey but the investment will be worth it. Hourglass are great at finishing powders but it’s their primer that will lock in your makeup and help to prevent any pilling or separation on your skin. It gives you a really silky smooth finish that is radiant without being greasy and it also repels water so humidity (aka mask wearing) won’t be a problem.
Great for oily skin, this lightweight primer from Revlon gives you a smooth matte finish that doesn’t ever feel too dry. We all know how matte makeup has staying power and this primer is no different as it creates the perfect base for makeup to sit comfortably on the skin while preventing transfer to your mask. Plus, it works really nicely with both matte finish foundations and dewy products so you can play around with your look without having to worry about it rubbing off halfway through the day.
This super hydrating and fine mist is a cult classic for a reason. It works as both a primer and a finish spray giving the skin a luminous and dewy feel that dries down to lock makeup in while feeling like you’re wearing nothing at all. Being super fine you can apply as much as you need and top up throughout the day to refresh your look without feeling like you’re over doing it and it dries fast enough that you never experience and slipping and sliding.
If you’re going for a heavy coverage foundation and want a budge-proof setting spray, go for Urban Decay. This lightweight spray makes me reminisce about my high school days when I would use hairspray to set my look. It gives you the same hold minus the stickiness. In fact, you don’t really feel it at all once you spray it on. It’s not at all drying and works well with both matte and dewy finish foundations.
