It’s no secret that any hair style looks better when crafted from healthy hair. Hydration is one of the biggest factors when it comes to achieving hair that’s smooth, shiny and that doesn’t puff up as soon as you step outside on a day there’s a little moisture in the air. Winter weather doesn’t make it easy to maintain hydrated hair which is where hair masks come in.
Unfortunately, plenty of drugstore, and even salon quality products, are loaded with things that aren’t so great for our tresses like silicones, SLS, SLES and PEG. Not to mention they can be pretty expensive.
Luckily, your kitchen cupboard (and fridge!), are likely loaded with ingredients that can be whipped into affordable DIY hair masks in minutes that will naturally bring dry and damaged hair back to life.

Our Favourite DIY Hair Mask Recipes
For when you have oily roots and dry ends: Oatmeal, Avocado, Apple Cider Vinegar and Yoghurt
Dry ends and oily roots are a dreaded but common combo so this DIY hair treatment covers both. The fats and oils in avocado make it a great hydrator for dry hair while yoghurt provides proteins that help to restore breaks in the hair shaft. Apple cider vinegar is very cleansing and helps to control oil production, and oats will give you a little thickness while also absorbing extra oil.
To make it: Mix one small ripe avocado, one tablespoon each of oats and apple cider vinegar, and two tablespoons of yoghurt in a bowl.
To use it: Apply it to wet hair and massage into your scalp and through the ends of your hair. Pop on a shower cap to avoid mess and let it sit for 20 mins before thoroughly rinsing.
For ends that need some serious hydration: Coconut Milk, Olive Oil and Honey
If you find your hair is frizzy no matter what you do, and blows up to twice its size the second there’s a drop of rain in the sky, this is for you. Dry hair goes frizzy because it’s seeking moisture from the outside air. Honey is great for attracting and sealing in moisture while coconut milk and olive oil both deeply nourish and condition your hair for long-lasting hydration.
To make it: Mix one quarter of a cup of coconut milk with a teaspoon of olive oil and one tablespoon of honey in a bowl.
To use it: Apply to dry hair and carefully comb through to saturate all strands. Use a shower cap to create a little warmth and rinse out after 20 minutes.
