19 May The Skin Care Ingredients You NEED To Know About

For me buying good skin care is all about the ingredients. Not just what ingredients are in a product but also how potent they are within that product.

When I shop for skin care there are a few ingredients I always look for. Things I know actually penetrate and benefit the skin in a multitude of ways.

Here are a list of the skin care ingredients you need to know about!

Vitamin A aka Retinol is undoubtedly the most exciting ingredient in anti ageing skin care. Retinol/ Vitamin A is a powerful anti oxidant which resurfaces and regenerates the skin , creating healthier skin cells. There is of course the issue with potency… While many supermarket brands contain retinol they predominately don’t have enough potency to actually do anything. The other issue is that retinol needs to be packaged in an air-tight container that doesn’t let in air or light, otherwise it will lose it’s effectivness.

If you want to seek out a highly effective retinol product it’s best to opt for a cosmeceutical available from your local skin clinic or cosmetic surgeon.

If you’re concerned with anti- ageing Retinol is a must!

BHA/Beta Hydroxy Acid aka Salicylic Acid is found in a huge amount of skin care products. It works to gently exfoliate the skin, unclog pores and even out the skin tone. Because it’s a very gentle acid it can be used by absolutely any skin type even sensitive.

Coconut Oil is a hugely underrated skin care star. It has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, its moisturises the skin, it helps soothe irritation and it penetrates the skin well.

My motto is “If in doubt try coconut oil!” Seriously I use it for everything and my skin loves it!

Always use an organic coconut oil for maximum skin care benefits.

Hyaluronic Acid- I literally drink the stuff! Seriously I do but I’ll get to that later….

This is the supreme hydrating ingredient. It’s responsible for the hydration and plumpness of our skin. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally within the skin and it’s moisture binding ability keeps the skin plump and supple. It binds collagen and keeps the skin firm. If you ensure your skin care contains Hyaluronic acid your skin will always be hydrated and look firm. It’s suitable for all skin types, even oily skin.

I have a liquid Hyaluronic Acid supplement which I drink each day… Yep it’s a moisturiser I can drink, and it works like a charm!

I also have a hyaluronic acid serum which I pat on my fine lines and it plumps them up making them less visible.

Manuka Honey is liquid gold. If you google it you’ll find there are a zillion different health benefits of Maknuka Honey. And as a skin care ingredient it can be a saviour for anyone with breakouts, irritation or infection. Manuka Honey has powerful healing properties, it calms the skin and also acts as an anti-inflammatory. It’s also a natural anti-fungal and antibacterial.

Panthenol– also known as vitamin B5. Panthenol is a fantastic ingredient for anyone with dry skin. It easily penetrates the skin, infuses water into the cells, and holds it deep within the tissue. It acts as a moisturiser and lubricant within the skin which soothes dry and itchy skin. I always make sure the moisturiser I use at night contains Panthenol. While you sleep is when the skin is most receptive to what you apply to it and I find it works over night infusing loads of moisture into my skin.

Panthenol is a naturally derived ingredient.

Resveratol is my favourite anti-oxidant because it gives me an excuse to drink red wine!

Found in the skin of grapes and in red wine, Resevratol is a powerful natural anti-oxidant.

When ingested it reduces inflammation within the blood vessels and improves their function. And on the skin it has a powerful ability to firm and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Resveratol has an astonishing ability to neutralise free radical damage on the skin and promote collagen production. I’ve always recommended using Resveratol in a serum, as this is where it will be in the most potent form.

Not like I needed an excuse, but now I just tell my husband I’m on the wines to keep me looking youthful!
